Faculty of English

The Department of English was established in 1954 with 2 lecturers. It is now a full-fledged Department with a faculty of thirteen.

The Courses offered are

General English: B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com.
Business English: B.Com (Professional)
Spoken English: Additional subject for all the first year Degree students.
Modern Language English: B.A. (English Literature)
Communicative English: A Two-months Certificate Course for students and housewives. Objectives:
  1. To enable the students to read, listen, understand and communicate in English confidently.
  2. To expose the learners to good writing in English.
  3. To equip the students towards creativity and better performance in today’s world.

Details of the curriculum for the period 1999 – 2005.

I.

  • General English is taught to all the students of I,II,III & IV Semesters.
  • Business English is taught to B.Com (Prof.) students in I, II, III & IV Semesters.
  • Modern Language English is offered as an optional Subject with History & Political science.
  • Spoken English: Certificate Course in Spoken English & Communicative English is offered to the students & housewives.
  • A language lab has been set up to teach Spoken & Communicative English effectively. After the completion of the short-term course, certificates are given to the students.

  • Syllabus for General English is designed in such a way that the students are exposed to the different genre in literature i.e. Prose, Poetry, Novel, Short Stories and Grammar. They are also taught précis writing, Note making, Curriculum Vitae, Business letters, Report Writing and Description. The Syllabus for B.Com Professional Students comprises of correspondence, writing of Quotations and Tenders. An Anthology of six poems, Report Writing, Precis, Agenda and a Novel, The Bachelor of Arts by R.K. Narayan is also prescribed. They are also taught to write essays on current events, minutes of the meetings and interpretation of data. Students of Modern language English have History of English literature from Elizabethan to Modern literature, which is divided among six semesters and eight papers, as the last two semesters have two papers each. In the sixth semester they are taught Indian writing in English from Renaissance in India to Modern Writers i.e. from Toru Dutt to A.K.Ramanujan, Nissim Ezekiel and R.Parthasarathy. In semester VIII, American literature is introduced and they are taught background to American literature, American Poetry, Novel & Drama.

  • The Syllabus is helpful for the students to go for P.G.Entrance Tests, Bank Exams & Administrative service Exams.
  • Communicative and Spoken English is taught for the students from the rural background in order to help them to join the main stream.


The entire syllabus is designed by the department and it is totally different from O.U.Syllabus that is prescribed in other autonomous and affiliated colleges. Testing pattern is also different. Viva Voce is conducted for Spoken English course and weightage is given in the examination.
