- Profile:
The Department of Chemistry is as old as the college. Over the years, it has been the mainstay of the college with substantial student strength of the college pursuing chemistry as one of the main subject. The Department grew horizontally and vertically with Chemistry mixing well with all the combinations like Maths, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Food & Nutrition & Forensic science. Even when there was enormous craze for Engineering and Medicine, the demand for Chemistry combination is undiminished over decades.
The Chemistry Department was instrumental in churning out many students who have become Engineers, Doctors, Lecturers and Scientists serving in India & abroad. The Department still remains the backbone of the college with highest student intake.
The focus of the department is to impart quality education, making forays into high end combinations like Microbiology, Biotechnology, Food & Nutrition & Forensic Science which have become the new buzzwords.
Chemistry Department has contributed members for the chair of Principals for 38 years. The Doyen of Chemistry Department Mrs. Indira Lakshmaiah who has made an awesome and longest stint as Principal of the College for three and a half decades, Mrs.Nalini served as Head, Department of Chemistry for 35 years. Mrs.Rajeshwari, as Principal for two years and Dr.G.Seshikala, as Principal for one year. The Present Principal, Dr.M.Surekha Reddy is also from the Department of Chemistry.
The Department has a committed and dedicated faculty of 17 members out of which, 4 are Doctorates, 7 are NET qualified, 3 are SET qualified. To farther this cause and to widen the students horizon the Department regularly conducts seminars, workshops, extension lecturers, exhibitions and study tours.
The Department has ten Laboratories, an Audio-Visual room and a Library with good collection of books. A well equipped Research Laboratory is recently established by the Department. The faculty are involved in active research in various areas of Chemistry. The Research lab is fully Equipped with Flourescence Spectrophotometer, UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Rota evaporator, Electronic balance, UV cabinet, Deep freezer, Hot air oven, Microwave oven, Magnetic stirrer, Gel-Electrophoresis, Digital Conductometer, Mechanical stirrer & a computer system with Latest Chemistry software, Printer & a scanner
The Department received one minor research project from UGC. The faculty have published around 35 papers in National and International Journals with good impact factor and also presented papers at various National and International Conferences.
A Masters Course in Chemistry with Organic Specialization is commenced from the academic year 2005-2006.
Forensic Science is introduced as an optional subject by the Department at undergraduate level during the academic year 2014-15. The course has drawn a tremendous response from different states of the country with the strength of 69 students.
Two certificate courses were introduced for U.G students during the academic years 2015-16.
- Food Safety & Toxicology
- Cyber Forensics
M.Sc Organic Chemistry:
- Masters course in Chemistry with Organic Specialization commenced from academic year 2005-2006.
- Autonomy has been conferred on the college by U.G.C for M.Sc (Organic Chemistry) course from the academic year 2011.
- Admission through entrance conducted by OSMANIA UNIVERSITY.
- Total intake of students-36
- It is an affiliated course of Osmania University
- Exam pattern - Semester system.
- Project work has been introduced as a separate practical paper for M.Sc (Organic Chemistry) students from the academic year 2011-2012
Curriculum Development:
- Department is growing horizontally and vertically with Chemistry mixing well with all the combinations like Maths, Physics, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Food & Nutrition & Forensic Science.
- Syllabus is revised, redesigned on a regular basis incorporating the recent trends.
- The Board of Studies in chemistry meets once in a year and reviews the syllabus, model papers, and panel of examiners and suggests ways and means for continual improvement.
- On the basis of new U.G.C model curriculum 2001, Department of Chemistry was first amongst all the affiliated colleges to frame and implement new syllabus from the academic year 2003-04 for all B.Sc. Chemistry Courses. Again during the academic year 2009-10 the syllabus is revised & redesigned on the basis of new UGC model curriculum 2001 & A.P Common Core Syllabus for all the B.Sc. Chemistry combinations.
- Taking utmost advantage of the autonomy to the college the Department has introduced Vocational and also research oriented practical like Adulteration tests and using the principle of Steam distillation, extraction of Eucalyptus oil, clove oil, Aloe Vera extract, rosewater. Analysis of purity of drugs like Vitamin C, Analgin, Comparative study of Antacids. Preparation of cosmetics like soap, toothpaste, toothpowder, cold cream at B.Sc. III year level.
- Question Banks are updated semester wise.
- To Supplement to the classroom theory and Lab Room practice and to give maximum exposure to external expertise, the chemistry department is conducting extension lectures seminars, workshops, Industrial tours and exhibitions with all round participation.
- Group projects are undertaken by the students on various topics regularly.
- Syllabus has been framed as per Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) format for both U.G & P.G from the academic year 2012-2013.
- Project work has been introduced as a separate practical paper for M.Sc (Organic Chemistry) students from the academic year 2011-2012
- Two certificate courses were introduced for U.G students during the academic years 2015-16. Food Safety & Toxicology 2. Cyber Forensics
