401.Strategic Management

The objective of this course is to provide an overall picture of the role and activities of top management in the functioning of an organization. The course provides an understanding of strategy formulation, Analysis and implementation in competitive business environment.

UNIT I:
Strategic Management: Utility and applications. Strategic Management Process and Role, Strategic Planning and Management control, Developing a strategic vision, Mission, Setting objectives, Crafting a strategy, Factors shaping a company strategy, linking strategy with ethics and social Responsibility.

UNIT II:
Strategy Alternatives: Ansoff’s growth vector – BCG & GE Model. Porter’s Generic Strategic Strategies, Business strategy analysis: Competitor analysis, Competitive forces, Framework for competitor analysis, Competitor intelligence system. Value chain and Competitive scope, Technology and competitive advantage.

UNIT III:
Strategic dimensions and structural analysis within industries profitability. Strategic approach in industry evolution, fragmentation, emerging industry, industry maturity and industry decline. Competitive moves, competitive strategy under uncertainity. Attack & defense strategis,core competence Theory.

UNIT IV :
Corporate strategy : Strategies for small business. Turn around management. Management of a diversified firm and strategic decisions in merges, takeovers and divestments. Expansion strategies. Vertical integration, Horizontal strategy, Interrelationships and amongst business units. Entry into new business.

UNIT V :
Strategy implementation : Strategy and structure, Restructuring and Empowerment. Corporate culture and leadership, Balanced Score card.
