The Computer science Department was introduced in the year 1989-90.

Progression:

Under autonomy the Department of computer science got started with one lab and a single course combination.Today it has grown both infrastructural wise and course combination wise.As far as infrastructure is concerned, the Department has 5 well equipped labs with a total of 85 pentium systems & 7 printers.All the academically required software such as C,C++,ORACLE,VB,JAVA,MS-OFFICE are loaded with 2 servers(1 unix and 1 linux servers)catering to the academic needs of the students pursuing various courses with computer science combinations.Course Combinations have increased over the years and today a total of six combinations with computers as one of the optional subject is existing.These six combinations are MPCs,MSCs,Bio-informatics,Bio-Chemistry-Chemistry-Computers,B.Com Computers & B.Com(Professional).The Department's manpower in handling present student strength of 846 has also grown from 1 to 9 faculty members, there by making the student-staff ratio as 94:1 with additional supporting staff which includes 2 programmers,one lab assistant,two lab boys.

Activities of the Department :

1. Two staff members Y.L.MalathiLatha and M.Lalitha are pursuing higher studies of M.Tech & P.hd respectively in computer streams.
2. A Job-oriented,3 months short term certificate course "DESK TOP PUBLISHING" is conducted by the Department on a continuous basis.
3. Staff are participating in seminars and lectures oraganised in the college. The Department has demonstrated computer related exhibits during golden jubilee celebrations.
4. Extension lectures are organised for the students every year so that they are abreast with changing technologies & latest industry trends.

Special Features Of The Department:

• As part of improving the communication skills for the final year students, seminar presentations on computer related topics is introduced for B.Com computers since the academic year 2000-2001 onwards and will be extended for B.Sc students as well.
• The Department is first to introduce question bank in the practical sessions and is being followed for last 5 years.Students are made to learn programming concepts in the labs by giving demonstrations using CAL packages.
• Under Autonomy, Basic computer training in MS-Office is imparted to all B.A,B.Com,B.Sc regular students in second year from the time of inception of the course.
• Provision is made in the labs for students to update their subject concepts and knowledge using relevant CD's.
